Why I Look Beyond the Brand Name When Choosing Makeup

I learned that a familiar makeup name cannot tell me how my skin will react. Here is why I look more closely at ingredients when choosing beauty products.

For years, I bought makeup from well-known brands. I recognized the names, loved the colors, and assumed that a familiar label meant the product was right for me. Over time, I experienced rashes and became concerned about changes in my hormones. I cannot say that makeup caused those hormonal changes, but the experience made me much more thoughtful about the products I use every day.
For the past few years, I have chosen to use Carmelas Cosmetics. That choice is personal. I wanted to know more about what I was putting on my skin and feel confident in the standards behind my makeup.
A familiar name is a starting point, not the whole story
A beautiful campaign or a famous logo can make a product appealing. It cannot tell you whether a particular formula will agree with your skin. Makeup can contain ingredients that trigger irritation or an allergic reaction in some people, even when many others use the same product without a problem.
That is why I encourage you to look beyond the name. Read the ingredient list. Pay attention to how your skin responds. If a product repeatedly causes redness, itching, or a rash, stop using it and speak with a dermatologist about what may be causing the reaction.
What “clean” means to me
I use the word clean to describe a more intentional approach to beauty: asking questions about ingredients, choosing products that fit my values, and expecting clear information from a brand. “Clean” and “non-toxic” are broad marketing words; they do not guarantee that a product is safe for everyone or that a natural ingredient cannot cause a reaction. What matters is the actual formula, how the product is made and used, and how your own skin responds.
At Carmelas, our approach is to create makeup that feels beautiful to wear while being thoughtful about our ingredient choices. We want you to choose a matte lipstick because you love its color and performance and because you feel informed about what you are buying.
Beauty should invite questions
My experience changed the way I shop. I no longer choose makeup solely because a brand is famous. I ask what is in it, whether it suits my skin, and whether the company is transparent about its products.
You deserve to ask those questions too. Your makeup should express who you are, and your choices should be guided by more than a recognizable name.
My experience is personal and does not establish that any makeup product caused a hormonal condition. If you have persistent skin reactions or concerns about your hormones, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
